Social computing is a term coined to represent that increasingly computers are being used to mediate interaction between humans and that even information has a social life. Traditionally however, online learning has most often been an individual activity characterized by a sense of social isolation and little social interaction.      

Dr. Laffey will provide a framework for understanding the social nature of learning and the role of social ability in online learning. Examples will be given to show how social computing can be used in education and how systems, interface design, pedagogies and activities can be developed to better account for the social nature of learning. 

【专家】Laffey教授（曾在Apple公司担任过六年的学习与支持系统主管）
Dr. James Laffey is a Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and co-founder of the Center for Technology Innovations in Education.He has been the principal investigator for several NSF awards to study and advance understanding and practice for bring technology to bear in education.

His teaching and research interests are in developing technology innovations to facilitate learning and support performance.His current research includes developing new systems and new knowledge about social computing and social ability in educational computing.

Before coming to MU he worked for six years at Apple Computer, Inc. conducting research and development for learning and support systems. While working at Apple he was responsible for developing award winning interactive learning systems, and designing innovative systems that enabled Apple to better meet customer requirements.

Dr. Laffey earned his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and has worked at the University of Washington and San Francisco State University.

 美国加州圣地亚哥大学教育技术系副教授，美国国家外语教学资源中心网路项目负责人。美国核心杂志《教育技术研究和发展》 (Educational Technology Research and Development) 编委； 第九和十届全球华人计算机教育应用大会程序委员会委员。

1995年毕业于北京大学中国语言文学系，1997 年获宾夕法尼亚州立大学比较文学硕士，2001年获密苏里大学信息科学与教育技术博士， 并连续四年获得爱尔维丝--霍金思杰出博士生奖。曾为密苏里大学教育技术革新中心研究主管， 密苏里当地电视台实习网路记者, 摩托罗拉大学和全球最大审计公司--PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP 网路培训顾问。至今已在各类海外杂志，书籍，和国际会议上发表学术论文将近三十篇，其中关于网路交流性别差异的一篇获2002年全球国际数字化学习会议突出论文奖。
 
她也是业余作家，在海外华人杂志上发表小说散文和文学评论二十多篇。代表作：《在太行山的日子》，《青龙河的传说》，《倾诉时代》，《妖魔化中国的背后》(作者之一)曾为1997年中国畅销书。 近期创作：《巴黎天空》 和 《一个人的弗莱明歌》 (长篇小说)。
